How I chose this profession:
After graduating from college, I was working in downtown Berkeley, CA, at an employment agency. I had a liberal arts background, but I began to notice the numbers of homeless and disaffected persons who would come into the office seeking some kind of help that we, as a business, were unable to offer them. Around the same time, my mother was dealing with relocating my elderly grandparents, my grandfather had to enter long-term care, and I could see the emotional strain all were under. I got my MSW with the idea of doing clinical work with adults or older adults. As a clinical social worker, I found my professional niche. When I returned to school for doctoral studies and since, my major interests have continued to be in the areas of adult development, aging, and mental health treatment.
