Professional Associations

 

Professional organizations are good sources of information for not only what is happening in the professional organization but also in the field in general. Professional organizations often promote policies and best practices that reflect the professional organizations own goals and values. The organizations here represent a variety of interest groups for social and human services workers.

In addition to providing information about themselves, these organizations also provide information around credentialing for practitioners. More information on licensing and credentials can be found under Credentialing and Licensing .

 

American Counseling Association (Ohio Branch)
The Ohio branch chapter of the American Counseling Association. Activities focus on the advancement of the discipline of counseling. Offers a discussion list (OCAN) that can be subscribed to by all counselors. Links back to the national American Counseling Association web site.  (See also: Ohio Counseling Association.)

Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW)
This organization is a division of the American Counseling Association. It provides resources for teachers, students and practitioners of group work. Association of Oncology Social Work
The Association of Oncology Social Work "is dedicated to increasing awareness about the social, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs of cancer patients. It supports its members' commitment to helping and advocating for cancer patients by providing continuing education through conferences and publications; promoting clinical research; and fostering networking to address common issues and concerns." --From the website.

Association of Social Work Boards

Clinical Social Work Association
(Formerly: Clinical Social Work Federation)
The Association is concerned with clinical social work practice. The site has links to information on conferences and workshops as well as a job board.  "The Association's mission is to promote excellence in clinical social work practice through the advancement of the profession for the benefit of clients and the clinicians who serve them.  The Association fulfills its mission through advocacy at the national and state level on matters related to the profession, mental health, education, and information distributed to its members."

Community Action Partnership
[Formerly: National Association of Community Action Agencies.]

Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
The CSWE site includes information about accreditation of undergraduate and graduate social work programs, CSWE publications (including abstracts of the latest issue of the Journal of Social Work Education), and an informative list of frequently asked questions. You can also find a comprehensive list of master's and baccalaureate social work programs maintained by the Council on Social Work Education. The site allows you to search by state or by institutional name. International Federation of Social Workers
A global organization geared to international cooperation among social workers. Site includes the Federation's Code of Ethics and related publications.

Latino Social Workers Organization

This association is a professional organization offering workshops, advocacy, lobbying, and scholarships. Text in Spanish. (From the web site).

National Association of Social Workers
The web site for the largest professional organization for social workers. Includes professionally related material and a job section.

National Association of Social Workers (New York City Chapter)
New York chapter of NASW and distinct New York focus for licensing and credentialing but with articles around various "local" issues with national impact.

National Association of Social Workers (Ohio Chapter)
The web site of the Ohio Chapter of NASW focuses on issues pertinent to the regions within the state.

North American Association of Christians in Social Work
Social work with a Christian perspective.

Ohio Counseling Association
The OCA is "a state branch of the American Counseling Association, making it the officially sanctioned link" to the national organization.

Society for Social Work and Research
SSWR is an independent organization that "works collaboratively with other organizations that are committed to improving the support for research among social workers." Their Web site is primarily geared to membership information, although there is a Resources link to external resources relating to social work research.
